What Is Emotional Intelligence (EI)?

EI is the dimension of intelligence responsible for our ability to regulate our internal emotional self and our responses to emotions. This includes the skills that drive our internal world as well as our response to the external world

Two components of Emotional Intelligence

There are two components to EI, personal competence and social competence.

Personal Competence

  • A well-honed timing for emotional expression and emotional control
  • Personal influence that helps us advance our purpose with others
  • Integrity that aligns us with our life’s purpose

Social Competence

  • Social Awareness and Management
  • Empathy for others
  • Social expertise that allows us to develop strong working relationships
  • Communication and Conflict Resolution Skills
  • Trust Development and the Trust Bank

Emotional Intelligence in Practice

  • Ability to Label feelings
  • Ability to Distinguish between thoughts and feelings
  • Take responsibility for their feelings and Validate others’ feelings
  • Practice getting a positive value from their negative emotions
  • Avoid people who invalidate them
